Tow Behind Mixer
Tow-Behind Concrete Mixers
Tow-behind concrete mixers are engineered for high-volume onsite mixing of cement, sand, water, and coarse aggregates like gravel. Unlike mortar mixers, these units utilize a rotating drum with stationary internal paddles that lift and drop the material to achieve a uniform consistency. Most professional rental models feature a 9 cubic foot capacity, capable of mixing up to two 80 lb bags per batch. Built on a heavy-duty tubular steel frame with a pintle or ball hitch, these mixers are highway-towable and often include suspension springs to reduce bounce during transport. Many units are equipped with EasyClean polyethylene drums to prevent buildup and simplify end-of-day maintenance.
Tow-Behind Mortar Mixers
Specifically designed for smooth-aggregate materials like mortar, stucco, and plaster, tow-behind mortar mixers use a stationary horizontal trough with internal rotating paddles. These cast iron paddle arms are equipped with rubber wiper blades that scrape the sides of the drum to ensure a thorough, lump-free mix. Because they lack the tumbling action of a concrete mixer, they are not suitable for gravel or stone, which can jam the paddle system. Professional models typically offer an 8 to 12 cubic foot capacity and feature an integrated bag cutter on the safety grate to streamline the loading process. These rugged units are powered by reliable gas engines and feature a manual dump design for precise pouring into wheelbarrows or mud tubs.
