Sewer Camera Locator

/

A sewer camera locator is a handheld receiver used above ground to pinpoint the exact location and depth of a camera head inside an underground pipe. For this system to function, the sewer camera must be equipped with a sonde (a small internal transmitter, typically operating at 512Hz). As the camera travels through the line, the sonde emits a continuous electromagnetic signal. The locator detects this specific frequency, allowing the operator to "walk the line" and identify the precise spot where a pipe is collapsed, blocked, or broken. This eliminates guesswork and prevents unnecessary digging by providing an accurate surface mark for excavation.

Modern locators feature digital displays with signal strength indicators and directional arrows to guide the operator toward the strongest point of the signal. Most professional units also provide a depth estimate, which is critical for determining the scale of a repair before breaking ground. These receivers are designed to filter out interference from other underground utilities or overhead power lines, ensuring a clear lock on the camera’s position. Whether you are mapping out a complex sewer system or locating a single root intrusion in a 4" main, the locator-sonde combination is the industry standard for non-destructive underground diagnostics.
